1) The NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT ALLIANCE at Duke has just invited us back to perform at their Fall Festival, NOVEMBER 3rd. It will be sometime between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on that day. They’ll tell us soon. Read on…IMPORTANT: Nov. 3rd was the day we had picked for our November Circle Gathering at 10 a.m. at the Royal Bean Coffeehouse. IF we choose to perform at Duke, we could meet at 10 as planned & drive over to Duke together. So we have to decide. Do we want to go to perform for the Duke NA Students? Or do we stick with playing at the coffeehouse? Both are very good things to do.
I NEED TO HEAR YOUR PREFERENCES!!!! Email me & let me know. The general consensus will rule.
My personal vote is to go play at Duke. Why? This is our chance to give back something of the American Indian flute tradition to a group of American Indian students who are celebrating their culture(s). It can be a time to educate people about one of the oldest American instruments. It can be a chance to expand our flute circle. Those of us who did this last year had a good time & we made some good contacts. This year it will happen earlier in the day (& maybe it won’t be so… WINDY!!!)
Let me know!!!!
2) Carlos Nakai is performing in Raleigh on Nov. 30. He is performing with a Hawaiian musician Keola Beamer – a legendary slack key guitar player. Carlos Nakai is without a doubt one of the premier Native American Flute players. This is a rare opportunity – he’s right here in our backyard! http://www.pinecone.org/ProgressCAL.html for tickets. Want to get dinner together before the show? Let John know. But there’s more…
3) AND GET THIS…Our Circle has a chance to host a workshop featuring none other than Carlos Nakai as the instructor. It would happen on the day following the Nov 30 concert – on Dec 1 in the afternoon. This will be for only about 20 people. A truly amazing opportunity to get a group lesson from one of the most influential & really great Native American Flute players.Details are still coming in. What will this cost? Probably $25-30. I am still negotiating about this.WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN SO WE CAN HOST THIS WORKSHOP?
A) We have to decide if the group wants to sponsor this event. (That means: are you willing to contribute some time and talent to help make it happen? Really willing?)
B) Are enough people willing to commit to paying and attending. A small group of participants will not pay enough to cover Nakai’s cost, plus publicity, plus cost of space, etc. (That means: who is willing to commit to pay $25-30 for an afternoon of flute learning with Carlos Nakai?)
C) What can you contribute to make this happen? Make phone calls to other regional flute circles? Design an eye-catching flyer? Help set up tables & chairs? Bring munchies? Host an overnight guest from another flute circle – sleeping bags or guest bedroom? Drum up some participants by emailing some folks from a contacts list? (That means: are you ready to volunteer?)SPEAK YOUR MIND, PEOPLE! I am all ears.
4) The Neuse River Flute Circle ribbon shirts are in and they are really nice looking. If you ordered one at our last meeting be sure to have your money ready to give Eddie at our next meeting. He is the shirt treasurer (a temp position we assured him!) More news to follow!Flutefully yours,
John Kincheloe
