Raleigh Concert with R. Carlos Nakai & Keola Beamer
Get your tickets now for the Tribal Voices concert featuring R. Carlos Nakai and Keola Beamer: November 30, at the Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh.
From the Pinecone website:
“Native Voices brings together two legendary musicians from America’s indigenous peoples-Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and Hawaiian slack key guitar virtuoso Keola Beamer -touring together for the first time to promote their collaborative CD, Our Beloved Land, on Canyon Records. R. Carlos Nakai, the world’s premier performer of the traditional cedarwood flute, journeyed to Hawai’i where he spent time fitting the haunting melodies of his flute into the soulful songs and brilliant arrangements of Keola Beamer, the world’s most revered living slack key guitarist. The result is a dramatic new music that seamlessly blends traditional elements of both American Indian and Polynesian Island styles: original songs, traditional Navajo-Ute and Hawaiian chanting, and music played on slack key guitar, Native American cedarwood flute, and the Hawaiian nose flute. Supporting the duo will be John Kolivas on bass and Moanalani Beamer (Keola’s wife) on whistle and several ancient Hawaiian percussive instruments. Moanalani, a master dancer, will also perform hula and other traditional Polynesian dances to the musical arrangements.”
Sounds really interesting! Lots of us in the NRFC are going and are planning to have dinner before the show. Contact John if you want to join us. Order tickets at www.pinecone.org

NRFC at Duke Saturday, November 3!
It’s time for us to meet again this Saturday! Almost everyone on our mailing list has voted for us to play at an event at Duke this Saturday. We will not meet at the Royal Bean as planned earlier. We have been invited again this year to perform at the FALL FESTIVAL presented by the NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT ALLIANCE at Duke University from 11am-2pm this Saturday. Those attending should park in the Bryan Center parking lot located beside Duke Chapel and next to the Duke Student Center. There will be an outdoor stage area set-up beside the Student Center for us to perform on. We will plan to meet at Duke since most are coming from North Raleigh or Durham. Directions are listed below.
Those performing should plan on about 4 songs or a couple of improvised songs. At John’s leading, let’s try to keep these to a more Native American traditional style or theme due to the cultural nature of the event.
Please email me to let me know if you’re planning to come. Coming thus far: Jon N., David, Kelly, Michelle, John K., Eddie, and maybe Jane. What’s Needed:
- They will have a sound system, but we may want to have a better one. Jon could you bring your sound system?
- For our sellers, we can have a couple of tables. Jon & David, do you plan to sell at this event?
-If you ordered one of our new NRFC ribbon shirts, plan to bring your $50 check, made payable to Mardi Medawar, and give it to me at the event.
Directions & Parking / From Raleigh: From Raleigh via I-40 West, take the exit for Durham Freeway (NC 147 North). Take the Fulton Street/Hillandale Road exit and turn left onto Fulton Street. Continue on Fulton Street until it ends at Erwin Road. Turn right onto Erwin Road. At the third traffic light, turn left onto Towerview Road. At the first traffic light (second intersection), turn left onto Science Drive. Take the second right, into the Bryan Center parking lot. Visitor parking is available in the Bryan Center visitors lot and the Bryan Center parking deck. To enter the parking deck, turn right immediately after you enter the Bryan Center lot. A limited number of spaces are available immediately in front of the Chapel. Note: parking is usually $2 per hour, but we are working on free parking passes.

1) The NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT ALLIANCE at Duke has just invited us back to perform at their Fall Festival, NOVEMBER 3rd. It will be sometime between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on that day. They’ll tell us soon. Read on…IMPORTANT: Nov. 3rd was the day we had picked for our November Circle Gathering at 10 a.m. at the Royal Bean Coffeehouse. IF we choose to perform at Duke, we could meet at 10 as planned & drive over to Duke together. So we have to decide. Do we want to go to perform for the Duke NA Students? Or do we stick with playing at the coffeehouse? Both are very good things to do.
I NEED TO HEAR YOUR PREFERENCES!!!! Email me & let me know. The general consensus will rule.
My personal vote is to go play at Duke. Why? This is our chance to give back something of the American Indian flute tradition to a group of American Indian students who are celebrating their culture(s). It can be a time to educate people about one of the oldest American instruments. It can be a chance to expand our flute circle. Those of us who did this last year had a good time & we made some good contacts. This year it will happen earlier in the day (& maybe it won’t be so… WINDY!!!)
Let me know!!!!
2) Carlos Nakai is performing in Raleigh on Nov. 30. He is performing with a Hawaiian musician Keola Beamer – a legendary slack key guitar player. Carlos Nakai is without a doubt one of the premier Native American Flute players. This is a rare opportunity – he’s right here in our backyard! http://www.pinecone.org/ProgressCAL.html for tickets. Want to get dinner together before the show? Let John know. But there’s more…
3) AND GET THIS…Our Circle has a chance to host a workshop featuring none other than Carlos Nakai as the instructor. It would happen on the day following the Nov 30 concert – on Dec 1 in the afternoon. This will be for only about 20 people. A truly amazing opportunity to get a group lesson from one of the most influential & really great Native American Flute players.Details are still coming in. What will this cost? Probably $25-30. I am still negotiating about this.WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN SO WE CAN HOST THIS WORKSHOP?
A) We have to decide if the group wants to sponsor this event. (That means: are you willing to contribute some time and talent to help make it happen? Really willing?)
B) Are enough people willing to commit to paying and attending. A small group of participants will not pay enough to cover Nakai’s cost, plus publicity, plus cost of space, etc. (That means: who is willing to commit to pay $25-30 for an afternoon of flute learning with Carlos Nakai?)
C) What can you contribute to make this happen? Make phone calls to other regional flute circles? Design an eye-catching flyer? Help set up tables & chairs? Bring munchies? Host an overnight guest from another flute circle – sleeping bags or guest bedroom? Drum up some participants by emailing some folks from a contacts list? (That means: are you ready to volunteer?)SPEAK YOUR MIND, PEOPLE! I am all ears.
4) The Neuse River Flute Circle ribbon shirts are in and they are really nice looking. If you ordered one at our last meeting be sure to have your money ready to give Eddie at our next meeting. He is the shirt treasurer (a temp position we assured him!) More news to follow!Flutefully yours,
John Kincheloe

This time we may check out a new place to play - great accoustics. You’ll be amazed, I think….
The NRFC ribbon shirts are in! They are uniquely ours - our choice of colors and design. We will debut them at our gathering. Some of us have already bought shirts & will wear them when we perform as the Flute Circle.
We hope to see you there.

Got some new flutes? New songs? New CDs? New flute resources? I’ll show you a neat way to write down a song on your laptop — using a special NA flute font. What do you want to share?

Neuse River Flute Circle Returns to DUKE Chapel! July 22, 2007
We have been granted permission to play again at DUKE Chapel, July 22nd, 2007! The assistant conductor for music at Duke Chapel, Allan Friedman, has invited us to return to play hymns, meditative and worshipful songs in the chapel. Let’s fill the historic cathedral ceilings of DUKE Chapel with the beautiful voices of the Native American flute. All are welcome, but since there might be guests in the chapel praying, we will request that our more experienced flutists play in this venue. Some may want to just come and listen to the music in this beautiful setting. This was one the highlights of last years NRFC performances, and it’s a great opportunity for us to share the NAF! Plan to meet at the chapel by 2:45pm. For those that can, we would like to go eat together afterwards!
When: Sunday, July 22nd from 3:00-5:00pm
Where: DUKE Chapel, DUKE University, Durham, NC
